Mathilda’s Shield
Aura moderate abjuration; CL 9th
Slot shield; Price 15,170 gp; Weight 15 lbs
The first of these shields was carried by the paladin Mathilda of the Stern Resolve and imbued with her steadfastness and compassion. Since then, various orders have invoked her example to make similar items. They are heavy steel shields painted with the symbol of their order and have a holy symbol set in the back just above the grip. They are very difficult to damage, as they are said to be as firm as Mathilda’s faith.

It is a +2 heavy steel shield that provides adjacent allies with a +1 shield bonus. This is increased to a +2 shield bonus and a +1 resistance bonus to saves for innocents that are adjacent. Whenever an enemy attacks an adjacent innocent rather than the bearer of Mathilda’s shield, she may make an attack of opportunity against the enemy (if adjacent) or immediately make an Aid Another attempt to increase Armor Class against that attack. The shield bearer may do this even if they would not normally have attacks of opportunity to use. Once per day, by touching the holy symbol (a swift action) the shield bearer may heal herself and all allies and innocents within 5 ft. of her for 1d8+3 points of damage. Mathilda’s shield has a hardness of 16 and 30 hit points.
