The ziffish term “goolabalum” translates roughly to the phrase “that which is within chaos but not of it”; the item looks like a grapefruit-sized glob of hard protoplasm that constantly shifts colors and shape. A goolabalum allows the possessor to absorb and manipulate certain windows of random chance, altering a d% roll or a d20 made to influence the possessor’s situation by 10% or 2 respectively (and in either direction), so long as it is not specifically an attack, saving throw, skill or ability check; even a roll to determine what wandering monsters are encountered. The goolabalum will hum and run its lights to inform the owner that such a contingency takes place, and the owner can alter probability as an immediate action. A goolabalum can alter probability 7 times before it goes dark and decays into protoplasm. The erkunae people of the Misty Isles learned the secret of making goolabalum many centuries ago, though theirs are somewhat flashier and levitate on the palm of the hand.
