Dragon-Spine Maul
Aura strong evocation and necromancy; CL 11th
Slot none; Price 35,320 gp; Weight 15 lbs
These weapons are rare, as they are made from the carved vertebra of a dragon, etched with runes and placed on a steel alloy shaft. They were originally the exclusive property of the Heartrippers sect of the Sons of War, an extremely martial religious order dedicated to proving themselves in combat against the strongest foes in the world. The Heartrippers were wiped out during a great struggle where they found that, one on one, the dragons did have the upper hand. A handful of their weapons survived as did a few works describing how they were made.

The dragon-spine maul is a +2 wicked maul (treat as a greataxe except it inflicts bludgeoning damage). Its wielder is instilled with a sense of purpose and strength, gaining a +1 morale bonus to Will saves against mind-affecting effects, raised to +3 against fear. When the wielder kills a foe with the dragon-spine maul he gains temporary hit points equal to the hit dice of the slain foe. These temporary hit point stack with themselves and last for an hour.

Once a day, by naming a foe (by shouting their name to the heavens and gesturing mightily) within line of sight, the wielder may invoke the Brand of the Sons of War. While doing nothing but trying to reach and slay that branded foe, the wielder gains: +2 shield bonus to Armor Class (as the maul deflects attacks), a +10 ft. enhancement bonus to ground movement, a +5 enhancement bonus to Acrobatic checks, and a number of temporary hit points equal to twice the hit dice of the named foe. These bonuses last for an hour or until the foe is slain. The subject of the brand knows that they have been targeted and cannot fail a Perception check to locate the wielder while the brand is active. A Brand of the Sons of War may not be invoked against a foe already branded.
